In soccer, the [IFAB’s 2026/27 rules](https://downloads.theifab.com/downloads/changes-to-the-laws-of-the-game-202627?l=en) allow a bracelet only if it is non-dangerous and safely, securely covered, while [FIBA basketball](https://assets.fiba.basketball/image/upload/documents-corporate-fiba-official-rules-2026-v1-1.pdf) prohibits jewelry. [FIVB volleyball](https://www.fivb.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/FIVB-Volleyball_Rules2025_2028-EN-v05.pdf) bans objects that could cause injury or give an unfair advantage, but it doesn’t list every bracelet as banned. So the answer depends on which rules your competition uses and what the officials make of your bracelet.

## Key facts

- IFAB 2026/27, Law 4.1: an accessory is permitted only if it is non-dangerous and safely, securely covered; a dangerous item must still be removed.
- Under IFAB Law 4.1, refusing to remove an unauthorized or dangerous item, or wearing it again, brings a caution.
- The FIBA Official Basketball Rules 2026 v1.1, effective 1 October 2026, list jewelry among prohibited items in article 4.4.2.
- FIBA separately permits textile wristbands and headbands up to 10 cm wide, subject to its team color requirement.
- FIVB indoor and beach volleyball rules for 2025–2028 (rule 4.5.1) forbid objects that may cause injury or give the player an artificial advantage.

For everyday decorative jewelry, taking it off before you play is the easiest route. If you need essential medical ID or prescribed monitoring, sort out how it stays with you ahead of time with the organizer and your provider or care team. General bracelet advice is never a reason to interrupt necessary care.

## Compare the governing rules

These are the international rulebooks as checked in October 2026. National leagues, schools, youth programs and casual sessions can set their own policies, so ask which rulebook and edition your event follows.

| Sport and rules | Ordinary bracelet | Does covering permit it? | Who applies the rule? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Soccer: IFAB 2026/27, Law 4.1](https://downloads.theifab.com/downloads/changes-to-the-laws-of-the-game-202627?l=en) | Permitted only if non-dangerous and safely, securely covered. | Only if the item itself is safe; dangerous items must come off. | The referee, with equipment inspections. |
| [Basketball: FIBA 2026 v1.1, article 4.4.2](https://assets.fiba.basketball/image/upload/documents-corporate-fiba-official-rules-2026-v1-1.pdf) | Jewelry is prohibited. | No, this provision has no exception for covered jewelry. | The crew chief checks equipment; officials cannot change the rules. |
| [Indoor volleyball: FIVB 2025–2028, rule 4.5.1](https://www.fivb.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/FIVB-Volleyball_Rules2025_2028-EN-v05.pdf) | Objects that could injure someone or give an artificial advantage are forbidden. | Not automatically. Tape doesn’t make it allowed. | The first referee has final match authority. |
| [Beach volleyball: FIVB 2025–2028, rule 4.5.1](https://www.fivb.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/FIVB-BeachVolleyball_Rules2025_2028-EN-v01.pdf) | The separate beach rules contain the same injury/advantage restriction. | Not automatically. Tape doesn’t make it allowed. | The first referee has final match authority. |

## Soccer: the 2026/27 change matters

Older advice that every bracelet must come off and tape is never allowed is out of date under the amended IFAB rule. The [2026/27 Law 4 amendment, page 7](https://downloads.theifab.com/downloads/changes-to-the-laws-of-the-game-202627?l=en), replaces the old jewelry wording and allows accessories on two conditions: the item must be non-dangerous, and it must be safely and securely covered. A dangerous item still has to come off. Covering it doesn’t change that.

So “Can I tape my bracelet?” has two parts: is the bracelet itself acceptable, and does your covering meet the rule? Check both before you count on tape, a sleeve or a wristband, and show the bracelet and the covering to the officials before play.

Under [Law 4.1’s inspection and enforcement provisions](https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/the-players-equipment/), players are checked before the match and substitutes before they come on. The referee can tell you to remove an unauthorized or dangerous item. A player who can’t or won’t comply has to leave at the next stoppage, and refusing or putting the item back on brings a caution. A coach saying it’s fine doesn’t count at the match inspection.

## Basketball: a sweatband and a bracelet are different

The [FIBA Official Basketball Rules 2026 v1.1](https://assets.fiba.basketball/image/upload/documents-corporate-fiba-official-rules-2026-v1-1.pdf), effective 1 October 2026, list jewelry among prohibited items in article 4.4.2, page 13. Plan to take a decorative bracelet off for any game played under those rules. The article allows taping parts of the body, but not taping over jewelry.

The same article separately permits textile wristbands and headbands up to 10 cm wide, subject to its team color requirement. Putting a wristband over a chain, charm bracelet or decorative band doesn’t make the bracelet allowed.

Articles 47.1 and 47.4, page 57, give the crew chief equipment-inspection duties and require them to prevent objects that might injure other players. Article 46.5 says officials have no authority to change the rules. For other equipment, article 4.4.5, page 14, requires FIBA Technical Commission approval, so if you need a device on your wrist, raise it with the competition organizer early.

## Volleyball: ask about the actual object

In the [FIVB indoor rules for 2025–2028](https://www.fivb.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/FIVB-Volleyball_Rules2025_2028-EN-v05.pdf), rule 4.5.1, printed page 19, prohibits objects that may cause injury or give the player an artificial advantage. It doesn’t say every bracelet is allowed, and it doesn’t say every piece of jewelry is banned. The first referee’s authority is set out in rules 23.2.1 and 23.2.3, printed page 51.

The [separate FIVB beach rules for 2025–2028](https://www.fivb.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/FIVB-BeachVolleyball_Rules2025_2028-EN-v01.pdf) use the same object restriction in rule 4.5.1, printed page 17, with first-referee authority in rules 22.2.1 and 22.2.3, printed page 39. Neither rule says taping a bracelet makes it acceptable.

If you’re unsure about a bracelet, ask the organizer before the session and show it to the referee. Be ready to take off ordinary jewelry if it isn’t accepted. Don’t assume it’s fine because it’s soft or small, or because someone else is wearing one.

## Medical ID and monitoring need their own arrangement

When you contact the club, say what the item is for. Essential ID, prescribed monitoring and a decorative bracelet are different conversations. Describe the exact device or ID and ask who can approve an arrangement for that competition. If you wear a religious or cultural item that can’t easily come off, explain that in advance too.

For a medical device, check any proposed cover or change of position with your provider or care team before you agree to it. Ask the organizer how the equipment and information you need will stay available during play. Don’t improvise by hiding it under tape or taking off essential ID at the sideline.

Soccer’s accessory change doesn’t cover electronic devices across the board: [Law 4.4 has separate electronic-equipment and tracking-system provisions](https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/the-players-equipment/). Tell the organizer if the item has electronic functions; calling it a wristband isn’t enough. Settle the arrangement before you play, and don’t stop necessary monitoring because of a general jewelry rule.

## Make removal easy when choosing an everyday bracelet

If you play regularly and want a decorative bracelet for the rest of the day, choose one you can take off yourself. Try the fastening before you commit, and think about whether you’re happy carrying it to training. A sentimental piece may be better left at home on match days.

Before you warm up, put the bracelet in a closed case or pouch in a zipped pocket of your bag that you always use for it. Don’t leave it by the court or loose in a kit pocket. If it doesn’t come off easily, deal with that before you arrive, not with a last-minute cover.
