## Content

Brazil celebrates Father’s Day, Dia dos Pais, on the **second Sunday in August**. The next one is Sunday, August 8, 2027. That puts Brazil about two months after the June date used in the United States and the United Kingdom, and [SBT News](https://sbtnews.sbt.com.br/noticia/brasil/dia-dos-pais-por-que-e-comemorado-em-agosto-no-brasil) notes that Brazil is one of the few countries to mark the day in August.

## Key facts

- Dia dos Pais falls on the second Sunday in August: August 9 in 2026, August 8 in 2027 and August 13 in 2028.
- The first celebration in Brazil was on August 16, 1953, proposed by the director of a Rio de Janeiro newspaper and radio station.
- August 16 was chosen because it was the feast of St Joachim in the Catholic calendar.
- The day later moved to the second Sunday in August, following the model of Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May.
- In a 2023 consumer survey, half of respondents called a family lunch at home a must for the day.

Because it always lands on a Sunday, Dia dos Pais is built around a day off with the family. If your dad is Brazilian, or lives in Brazil, plan around that Sunday, not a June date.

## When it is, and the next three dates

The rule is the second Sunday of the month, so the number changes each year and can fall anywhere from August 8 to August 14.

- **2026:** Sunday, August 9
- **2027:** Sunday, August 8
- **2028:** Sunday, August 13

Set your reminder as “second Sunday in August,” not a fixed date. If you also follow another country’s date, our [Father’s Day dates around the world](https://bracelet-buy.com/father-s-day-dates-around-the-world/) shows the main calendars side by side.

## Where Dia dos Pais comes from

The Brazilian date began as a newspaper initiative. [SBT News](https://sbtnews.sbt.com.br/noticia/brasil/dia-dos-pais-por-que-e-comemorado-em-agosto-no-brasil) and [Rádio Itatiaia](https://www.itatiaia.com.br/brasil/dia-dos-pais-entenda-a-origem-da-data-comemorada-no-brasil-neste-domingo-13/) both report that it was proposed in 1953 by the director of a newspaper and its radio station in Rio de Janeiro. SBT describes a commercial aim: August was a slow month for shops, and the day was meant to lift sales as well as strengthen family ties.

The newspaper’s edition of August 15, 1953 announced the first “Dia do Papai” (Daddy’s Day) for the following day, Itatiaia reports. August 16 was chosen because it was the feast of St Joachim, whom Catholic tradition regards as the father of Mary. According to SBT, other cities and states soon took up the idea, and in later years the day moved to the second Sunday of August so that it would always fall on a day of rest, good for family gatherings and for trade. Both sources say this followed the model of Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday of May.

## How families mark the day

The day centers on family gatherings, as [SBT News](https://sbtnews.sbt.com.br/noticia/brasil/dia-dos-pais-por-que-e-comemorado-em-agosto-no-brasil) describes. A 2023 consumer survey reported by [Monitor Mercantil](https://monitormercantil.com.br/dia-dos-pais-aponta-animo-dos-consumidores-superando-2022/) gives a sense of what that looks like. For 57% of respondents the celebration would be mainly at home, their own or a relative’s, and half said a family lunch at home was a must. Only 6% planned to celebrate at a restaurant. Barbecue, churrasco, was the favorite dish, well ahead of lasagna and pasta.

The same survey shows the range: 20% planned to stay home without visitors, 9% to host their family and 20% to visit their father or father-in-law. If you are new to a family, ask what usually happens before you plan a surprise.

## Choosing a bracelet for Dia dos Pais

August falls in the southern winter, but Brazil is a big country and the weather on the day can differ a lot from south to north. Think about whether he will be in long sleeves or short ones, and choose between a slim piece that sits under a cuff and something more visible.

A long lunch around a grill is not kind to delicate things, so a bracelet that is easy to care for will probably get more wear. Our comparison of [bracelet materials](https://bracelet-buy.com/bracelet-materials-compared-weight-water-scratches-price-ageing/) sets out how steel, silver, leather, cord and beads differ in weight, water tolerance and wear.

A family lunch also suits a shared gift. Children can choose the color, write the card or hand over the box at the table, and our guide to [a bracelet for Dad from the kids](https://bracelet-buy.com/a-bracelet-for-dad-from-the-kids/) has more ideas for letting them take part. If you are unsure of his size, our [wrist-measuring guide](https://bracelet-buy.com/how-to-measure-your-wrist-for-a-bracelet/) explains how to find it before you look at a design’s own sizing.

## Marking the day from abroad

If you live outside Brazil, your calendar will probably show Father’s Day in June, or in September in Australia or New Zealand. Add the Brazilian date yourself, with the year. A call just before or after the Sunday lunch is the best chance of reaching everyone at once.

Brazil’s neighbors use other dates: most Spanish-speaking countries in the region mark the day in June, and a few in March or July, as our guide to [Father’s Day in Latin America](https://bracelet-buy.com/fathers-day-in-latin-america-dates-by-country/) shows. If your family also marks another country’s date, agree which one gets the present. The [complete Father’s Day gift guide](https://bracelet-buy.com/father-s-day-gifts-the-complete-guide/) has ideas beyond bracelets.
