Father’s Day in Denmark is on **June 5** every year, the same day as Constitution Day (grundlovsdag). The next one is Saturday, June 5, 2027. According to [Lex](https://lex.dk/fars_dag), the Danish encyclopedia, the day was placed on grundlovsdag in 1935. When the other Nordic countries later moved to a Sunday in November, Denmark stayed with June.

According to [Lex](https://lex.dk/fars_dag), Father’s Day was introduced in Denmark by some business people, who placed it on grundlovsdag in 1935. [Videnskab.dk](https://videnskab.dk/kultur-samfund/hvorfor-fejrer-vi-fars-dag/) gives the same year and adds that the day had reached Sweden in 1931.

A committee of Nordic merchants later proposed moving Father’s Day to the second Sunday in November. Videnskab.dk reports that the plan never came to anything in Denmark because it was not communicated properly. Sweden, Norway and Finland did make the move, as [Store norske leksikon](https://snl.no/farsdag) describes, so Denmark ended up on its own.

Constitution Day itself is older and has its own meaning. [Lex](https://lex.dk/grundlovsdag) explains that it marks the first free constitution, signed by King Frederik VII on June 5, 1849, and also the later constitutions of 1915 and 1953.

## How families mark the day

Father’s Day is a low-key occasion in Denmark. A tradition researcher quoted by [Videnskab.dk](https://videnskab.dk/kultur-samfund/hvorfor-fejrer-vi-fars-dag/) says that, unlike Mother’s Day, it never really caught on, and the article describes it as still standing a little in the shadow of Mother’s Day. Where families do mark it, the article mentions presents and kind words for fathers.

On the same day, the country marks Constitution Day. [Lex](https://lex.dk/grundlovsdag) describes meetings with speeches and debate on democracy, held by parties, unions, interest groups, residents’ associations and schools. A family might go to one of those and still find time for a call or a small present for Dad.

So there is no expected format. If he has never paid much attention to the day, a short message may suit him better than a surprise.
