## Where the June 21 date comes from

The story usually starts with Mother’s Day. [Egyptian Streets](https://egyptianstreets.com/2023/06/21/celebrating-fathers-day-in-egypt-a-brief-history/) explains that Egypt’s Mother’s Day on March 21 was created in 1956 after a journalist campaigned for it, and [Gulf News](https://gulfnews.com/parenting/mums-dads/fathers-day-in-uae-when-is-fathers-day-celebrated-in-dubai-1.1624172262802) traces the regional Father’s Day back to the same origin.

According to Egyptian Streets, the same journalist proposed an Egyptian Father’s Day in 1985, on a different date, January 10. It was officially celebrated the following year but later forgotten. When the idea was revived, the account says, Lebanon adopted it first and Egypt later declared June 21 as Father’s Day.

June 21 is also around the June solstice. Gulf News points out the overlap, while Egyptian Streets says the solstice does not seem to have anything to do with the occasion. Most likely the two simply coincide.

## How families mark the day

Father’s Day is a smaller occasion than Mother’s Day in Egypt.
